gui for configuring java environment

IBM Romania is promoting Linux and is sponsoring a student contest to make a Linux application. I am thinking to make a GUI for configuring java environment in linux.

Is anyone knowing if such GUI already exists ? I am not sure but I think they are, for products made by BEA, JBoss, SAP,etc.

For the GUI I am thinking at swt or java-gnome.

GStreamer is something like Direct{Sound, Music, Show} for Linux. Kind of audio part from DirectX.

Seems like Nokia is playing with Gstreamer for a new cool device.

NRobot is exactly same thing but with C# and the gui is written in gtk#.
If you are on windows all you need is .net framework or mono and gtk# runtime (5.5M).
On linux you need mono and gtk#. I will provide later an ebuild for Gentoo Linux.

Hungarian notation seems deprecated.

The Microsoft naming conventions suggest using camel notation (initial lowercase such as someName) for variable names and Pascal notation (initial uppercase such as SomeOtherName) for method names and most other identifiers.

I still prefer hungarian notation for GUI elements like labels, buttons, etc.

What do you prefer ?

In February I joined Linux advocacy group. Sadly but that group is full of microsoft trolls. Somebody told me that the group was destroyed a long time ago. Today I found out that the trolls are from Romania(Cluj Napoca). Ruşine să vă fie.

Experienţa mea de blogger a început în felul următor.

Pe Windows foloseam klipfolio pentru a citi ştirile. După ce am migrat pe Linux, am căutat ceva asemănător deoarece klipfolio nu era disponibil pe linux[1]. Şi aşa am descoperit rss-urile.

La momentul acela şi clienţii de rss din linux[2] erau cam spartani dar ce-i drept că nici nu erau aşa populare rss-urile. După un timp am început să selectez rss-urile şi aşa a rezultat o categorie cam necunoscută, la care i-am pus numele weblogs ;) Încetul cu încetul acea categorie tot s-a mărit şi a devenit destul de greu de citit. După care am descoperit www.bloglines.com, şi am mutat toate weblogurile acolo, clientul de rss rămând pentru citit ştirile, alerte de securitate, etc.

Aceasta a fost prima parte a experienţei mele de blogger. Am de gând să mai deschid un blog unde voi continua. Momentan n-am nici o idee unde îl voi deschide, mi-ar place mult să fie într-un blog comunitar, planet.chip.ro sau ceva asemănător. :P

Această intrare în blog a apărut în urma acestei iniţiative. Am descoperit că blogosfera românească este mai mare decât mă aşteptam cu persoane extraordinare. kudos pentru Carmen şi Gabriela.

I am writing a frontend for nmap in gtk#. The program will be crossplatform.
The GUI is almost done, initially I will port old frontend, after that I will try to add new features like settings(save, load), view logs, history of IP targets.

Is expected a new release of mono, gtk#, monodevelop.

I have a nightbuild version of Firefox, now is using gtk file selector. New web standard XForms is working without problem so far, Firefox being the first browser who support xforms.

I finished a python program to show the current song from Muine, an audio player for linux written in C#.

For the moment can be used to show the song on irc channels via xchat and EXEC.

Lately I am starting to use web applications. Why ? Because all I need is a browser and they are easy to use. For me Firefox is the "OS".
I started with Gmail. Very fast reading emails, a lot of space and I don't have to worry about reading a saved email from Windows or Linux. I started to use for mailing lists and groups, forums registrations, etc. But now is becoming the main email account.

Bloglines.com Another cool web application. Same pro, reading weblogs is far more easy and fast compared with a client.

So, the future are on web applications.

Seems like IBM is pushing Linux in desktop and is serious about the plans for replacing Windows in their environment.

www.ibm.com/developerworks is all about Linux.
Now IBM is releasing a book on migrating to desktop Linux.

IBM PC business was sold to a China manufacturer, who is going to use Linux on workstations..

New architecture from IBM (powerpc) is develop in cooperation with Red Hat, Novell. It seems like IBM is going to focus on hardware.

I hope IBM Lotus Notes will be ported to Linux soon.

10,000 Firefox enthusiasts make history

I had to do some programming in Windows.
My windows (xp) is updated, I have SP2 installed.
The main problem was Visual Studio. After I compile a program, Visual C++ don't want to compile again, ctrl break is not working so I have to kill every time msdev. (thanks god that I can save). Somebody told me that is a known bug and the solution is to kill every time VC++.

Maybe I used Linux too much, because now Windows seems so annoying. The programs are not responding, YM open a windows for every conversation (one solution is to use gaim in windows). Explorer (not IE) crashed some times, annoying popups, etc.

So I reinstalled. But now in Visual C++ is not working autocompletion. WTF. I was so upset that I restarted in Linux, tomorrow I will try again. I lost almost all day in this journey on Windows.

Eclipse is a much better IDE that Visual Studio. I don't understand how can a opensource program can have so little bugs compared to a closedsource. The main problem for Eclipse is that eat a lot of memory. But eclipse is very flexible, a lot of big bucks project is made on eclipse platform, we can extend eclipse with a lot of plugins.

While writing this blog entry I find out a another thing, with CTRL+arrows I can change song in Rhyhmbox while I am in the Firefox browser. Foxytunes extension is guilty for that.

.NET I don't like because is only in windows, free implementation (aka mono) is in legal doubts. Microsoft can sue anytime mono over their implementation.

I have a lot of weblogs, I suggested some improvements for my current feed reader. I need this because I think is useful in categorized some feeds. Or I have to find a new way to manage my feeds, because the current method is not going to work in long term.
Feeds ratings could be a nice addition.

Now I am using Firefox in romanian, good translation, I have objections for some definitions but I am waiting to see if the current choices are reliable.

This week I have to finish translating a cool game - Bygfoot - a simple and nice game like championship manager.

What I managed today:

worked on a school project (irc client in VC++).

I installed the new version of gtray, would be nice a ebuild for gentoo, I hope is not illegal to check gmail with this kind of program, after all google did not manage to give us a Linux program to do that.

I want evolution notification in gnome systray and gaim to show my songs from rhythmbox.

Some notification like YM, Firefox in windows is necessary in Gnome. MonkeyPop is nice for the job, I will test it tomorrow.
